"What I have learned is to completely believe in myself and my gut reaction to something," she says. "Don't let rationale enter into anything. When I was younger, I would say, 'Let me see, what is the upside and downside of this?' I would analyze it to death."
As she gained more experience, Barbara found that she needed to pay attention to the wisdom of her instincts. "What I have found is that the true truth machine out there is your heart. If I see something — a person to invest in, a piece of real estate, anything I am going to spend a piece of my life on — I consider what is my immediate gut reaction. I pay attention. If I have a positive feeling, I throw rationale to the wind. I find that these things always work out if you trust your heart."
When Barbara discounted her intuition, she always regretted her decision. "For instance, I don't like somebody, but he has all these credentials. He went to Harvard; he specializes in this or that. Oh my God! This is an opportunity. And I lose my money. Why? Because I didn't like that guy, I didn't pay attention. So, I have really learned to pay attention to my instincts."
Her career in the competitive world of business has taught Barbara Corcoran to trust her heart. She also knows that she can trust her sister Jeanine. "Whenever I have a question about Florida real estate, there are many people I could call, but I always call Jeanine Corcoran. Not because she is my sister but because she's the best."
